WhatsApp is testing a new feature in its testing version regarding WhatsApp groups. Usually, when we leave a WhatsApp group, everyone is notified of which person or number left the group. But with the new version coming in shortly, that won’t be the case anymore.

The version will allow users to leave WhatsApp groups without notifying the other members in the group. Only the group admins will receive the notification of someone leaving the group. We already had the option to disable notifications for WhatsApp groups, but now the company is going a bit further and letting you leave groups secretly. Let’s discuss in detail this new upcoming feature on WhatsApp.

How to leave a WhatsApp group silently without getting noticed by other members?

As mentioned above, this feature is only in its testing phase and will be rolled out as a built-in feature when the stable version of the new version becomes available. For now, beta users can use this feature.

This feature won’t be available for any particular group. Once you enable this feature in your WhatsApp settings, you will see the same message, no matter which group you choose to leave from. Any group you leave with this feature turned on will ensure that nobody in the group will know that you left it. But group admins will be an exception, though. Group admins will be notified even when you secretly leave the group.

You can follow the steps below to leave a WhatsApp group silently when this feature is enabled.

For Android users,

  • Tap and hold the group you want to leave from.
  • Tap on the three-dot icon in the top-right corner of your screen.
  • Select Exit. You will see a message on the screen that reads, “Only Group Admins will be notified that you left the group.”
  • Tap on Exit below it, and you will be out of the group.

For iOS users,

  • Swipe left on the group you want to leave from.
  • Tap on More.
  • Then Tap on Exit.
  • You will see a message on the screen that reads, “Only Group Admins will be notified that you left the group.”
  • Tap on Exit below it, and you will be out of the group.

This feature is not yet available on the latest stable build of WhatsApp. But when the new version comes out, this is how it will function. You will have to enable the silent group leaves to feature in your WhatsApp settings menu to follow the abovementioned steps.

How do mute and archive WhatsApp Groups?

You still have the option of Archive and Mute for WhatsApp groups. The archive will remove the group from your chat section, and it will be placed in the archive section where you won’t receive any message notifications from the group. You won’t even see it. And Mute will let you mute all the group notifications for a specific period. It can be for 8 hours, one week, or one year.

Let’s look at how one can archive a WhatsApp group.

  • Tap and hold the group you want to archive.

  • Tap on the archive icon in the top-right corner of your screen. It looks like a small box with a downward arrow next to the three-dot icon.

  • Swipe left on the group you want to archive.

  • Tap on Archive.

Now, let’s look at how one can mute a Whatsapp group.

  • Tap and hold the group you want to leave from.
  • Tap on the speaker icon with a dash in the top-right corner of your screen.
  • You will see a pop-up asking about the duration of the mute. You can select between 8 hours, one week, and one year.
